More about the library

Bartram's Travels Exhibit on Display

We are currently hosting the professional exhibit, Bartram's Travels, on display in the Carlton Library through December 2009. It is provided courtesy of the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University and curated by the Cashiers Historical Society.

William Bartram (1739 - 1823) was to become one of the best known naturalists, botanists, and explorers of his day. As an adult, William attempted business and farming with no great success, and so in the year 1773, he determined to set off alone through America’s southeast on a sojourn that was to last four years. As he traveled, Bartram wrote exact and vivid descriptions of the plants and animals he saw and the tribes of native American Indians he encountered. He published these writings under the title Travels of William Bartram in 1791.

William Bartram and his father John are credited with the identification of over two hundred native plants, and with the discovery of the Franklinia alatamaha tree – named after friend Benjamin Franklin – which they found growing along a Georgia riverbank in 1765. Indeed, their attentiveness to this beautiful flowering tree ultimately saved the species from extinction.

Free Movies At The Library

First and third Thursday of each month

Movies are shown at 3:00 pm in the media room on an 8 x 10 ft. screen with state of the art surround sound. Free popcorn and refreshments provided. Movies are free, but donations are accepted. This series is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

July 23 - Family Cookout Night starts at 5:30 with free hotdogs and hamburgers followed by the movie "Tale of Despereaux" (rated G)

The title character is a little guy, even by mouse standards, with enormous ears and an imagination to match; much to the dismay of his elders, he "never cowers, won’t scurry, and refuses to be taught to be scared". That leads to his being banished from Mouseworld to the realm of the rats, where, it is presumed, he will be eaten. But no. Ratworld happens to be the current residence of one Roscuro, a peaceful sort whose shenanigans in the human world have accidentally led to the death of the Queen, the imprisonment of the Princess, and, worst of all, the banning of Soup Day! Roscuro and Despereaux join forces, inadvertently helped out by a homely but soft-hearted farm girl named Miggery Sow, and, well, you can imagine how it all turns out.

August 6 - The Secret Life of Bees - Rated PG-13, 114 mins.
