Learn A Foreign Language On Line
The Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library is pleased to announce a three-month introduction of Byki® Online Library Edition, a powerful new online language-learning system designed specifically for use by the patrons of public libraries.
Byki, short for “Before You Know It,” is a rapid learning system that takes users through a series of simple steps to memorize words and phrases in a new language, including their meanings and proper pronunciation, in the shortest possible time.
In addition to Byki Online’s advanced learning tools, users will have access to an array of online language and cultural resources including one click access to Facebook and Twitter language communities as well as Byki language Blogs featuring a collection of articles covering the language and the culture that surrounds it.
Creating a Patron Account: In order to set up a BYKI account you must be physically present in the library. When you ask to sign up you will be directed to the appropriate staff member who will help you set things up. You will need to create a user name and a password for your BYKI account.
Once you have created an account within the library you will then be able to access Byki Online from any computer with internet access by going to the following link: http://www.library.transparent.com/fontananc/flashcards/login or by going to our homepage and clicking on the BYKI graphic.
The Cashiers Bibliophiles Book Club meets the second Wednesday of the month at 5:30 pm. The Club is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains – but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving her husband's life in the wilderness. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son George fathered without her. Mother and child begin a struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons' intense, passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning. When parents Sara and Brian Fitzgerald find out that their daughter Kate has leukemia, they make the difficult choice to utilize the advancements of modern medicine and impregnate Sara with a child genetically ensured to be a donor match for Kate. Throughout the many years of dealing with Kate's illness, the needs of individual family members – including Kate's parents, her brother Jesse, and her sister Anna – are largely ignored in light of Kate's more serious needs. Still, Kate's sister Anna rarely complains about helping Kate, even when it involves undergoing painful bone marrow aspirations. Recently, however, Anna has had a change of heart and has decided to stand up for her right to have a say in medical procedures involving herself: she's enlisted a lawyer to help her sue her parents for medical emancipation.
The Library is hosting therapy dogs for children to read to. The R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program was such a success during the summer that the library hopes to continue it through the school year. Children are invited to stop by the library at 3:30 pm on Wednesdays to read out loud to Lily, Cera, Pilar or Darcy.
These special pups help children improve their reading skills and to increase the joy of reading aloud to a non-critical "audience." Children of all ages are welcome to choose a book to read to the certified therapy dogs, who are joined by their owners during the free sessions. The library thanks dog owners Deanna Klingel, Jo Ann Guise, Jeri Wexelbaum and Margo Purdy.
Friends of the Cashiers Library President, Sandy Bayley, accepted a generous $1,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley. The money has been used to update geography and science sections of the children’s collection and to purchase new beginning reader books.
During the week, there are special programs for pre-schoolers and home-schoolers. And the Reading Rover brings the library to pre-schoolers and day care providers throughout the area.
