If You Value Your Local Library, Please Tell Your Elected Officials

Libraries are the heart of their communities, providing residents of all ages with resources they need for jobs, education, and improved quality of life. Money spent on public libraries has a ripple effect in a community, effectively funding job creation and training, early childhood programs, elementary, secondary, and even higher education. Legislators and librarians know that libraries are not free, but they ARE worth every penny spent on them.

Did you know that state aid to public libraries has been cut from $2.24 per capita in 1998-1999 to $1.40 per capita in 2011-2012? Next year, the cuts could be even deeper.

The Fontana Regional Library System includes Macon, Jackson and Swain counties. In one year alone these three counties had…

• Over 460,000 visitors

• 60,000 people attending events

• 420,000 books & movies borrowed

• 55,000 library card holders

• 137,000 computer sessions

Macon County

In Macon County (population 33,922), 218,000 books and movies were checked out from the library. If residents of the county had to pay for these individually, it would cost over $4 million.

23,225 people attended free programs at the library including movies, music, and educational activities. If the library charged the going rate for these programs, it would cost about $278,700.

The Macon County library computers had over 66,000 sessions. You know how much it costs to buy a computer & software, pay for Internet access and maintenance.

Macon County Public Library Patron: "The ladies that work at the Nantahala Community library are so nice and helpful. They're like family to us! The library is like a home away from home!"

Please use this message to let your legislators know that public libraries are important to you.

If you have questions, please contact your county librarian Karen Wallace or the assistant county librarian Tracy Fitzmaurice or call them at 828-524-3600.
