| The Albert Carlton - Cashiers Community Library has been called the "heart of the village of Cashiers" and receives tremendous support from permanent and part year residents. The Library serves as a public meeting place, a gathering place for leisure time with friends, and an after school haven for the local charter school students. Members of the local community take care of the plantings and landscaping around the Library on a volunteer basis.
The Library has a large community room with theater lighting, stage and dressing rooms available for public use. The Library also has a quiet reading room with fireplace and coffee bar, and a smaller meeting room. We have a small collection of books of local and historical interest in a large elegant wooden display cabinet. The books are available for use in the library, but not for general circulation. Due to the high interest in investing, the Library carries both ValueLine and MorningStar investment references. Art Display Starting in late 2006, artist Kathie Blozan initiated a continual art show in the Cashiers Library Meeting Room. Artists featured in the show are all from the Fontana Regional Library system (Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties). Every three months, the show rotates original pieces that are suitable for all ages. Since its inception, the show has exhibited the works of over twenty local artists.
Internet Access The Library recently received a donation of $20,000 from an anonymous benefactor who was a seasonal library patron for many years. The money will be used to facilitate the final connection to the fiber optic internet access coming to the Cashiers community within the next year and to purchase four additional public access internet stations and additional staff computer work stations when the fiber optic network is in place. A number of parties including the Carlton family facilitated the funding of the cabling project to bring high speed internet access to the schools, library and communities of Cashiers and Glenville. Story Time on Wednesdays Join us every Wednesday morning for books, songs, and fun. A brand new, half-hour toddler story time debuts January 2008 at 10:30 AM, followed by the regular preschool program at 11:00. All story times are free and open to everyone. There is no story time in May.
This season's focus will be the pre-literacy skill of developing the ability to hear and play with smaller sounds in words by singing songs. Being able to hear the beginning and ending sounds in words helps children sound out words when they begin to read. Singing songs is one of the most enjoyable ways to develop this skill! Research has shown that children prepare to read years before they start school. Learning these important skills in a fun way at story time will help children become good readers.
Upcoming Programs for Children
