The Marianna Black Library primarily serves the 13,000 residents of Swain County. This number swells in the summertime with the arrival of seasonal workers and part-time residents to the Bryson City area. The Marianna Black Library collection offers materials for all ages, from birth to adult. And free internet access is available on nine public access computers. In 2007, 6,834 card holders checked out 40,562 books. The library has 34,365 items in all. In the Youth Services area, there are books, tapes and CDs for all interests and reading levels as well as four computers with educational games and a good selection of materials for parents and teachers.
In the adult selection, there is a large collection of fiction and non-fiction books in the traditional print format, books on tape and CD, videos and DVDs as well as large print books, a wide selection of magazines and a genealogy area. There are several areas inside with comfortable seating as well as a large study room with adult reference materials and homework resources. There is a front porch with benches and an inviting gazebo with a trickling fountain tucked away in the garden. A meeting room is available for public use during library hours and after hours use by special arrangement with staff.
A beautiful community flower garden graces the front of the library, maintained solely by staff and volunteers. You are encouraged to come and help keep the garden looking its best. Contact a staff member if you are interested in giving your time to help beautify our library. Through a program called Project Involved, funded through a Learn and Serve America grant, the Swain High School student cadets in the Air Force Junior ROTC cadets planted flowers, landscaped the front lawn and painted the library sign and outdoor benches.
Our program is open to Preschoolers through rising 9th graders. There will be ongoing reading incentives, contests and prizes throughout the summer. The children will log all the books they read (or read at home with family) as they go along. In addition, there will be story time, on-going crafts, special guests and an end of the summer pizza party. The first two weeks the children will be painting and also will have a guest teacher who will instruct them in making a pinch pot from clay. The pots will be then fired in a kiln and the children will have an opportunity to paint them the next week. This summer, the children will be saving all of their art for the end of the summer art show. The following weeks will focus on drama, writing, music, cooking and dance/movement. The end of the program event will also include a play for parents and friends that the children will participate in. New this year is "Independent Activities" on Thursdays. Children may come in at any time and work on fun activities set out for them or work on projects they started during program time and need to finish. This year, middle school students have their own program. It’s called "Express Yourself @ Your Library." These older kids will have more challenging activities, still centered around the theme of the arts. In addition they will have their own party at the end of the summer. Middle schoolers will have the opportunity to help with the play through lighting and set design, music, directing, acting and more. They will also participate in the art show. This summer we are looking for some high school volunteers, so any student who is interested in the arts, enjoys the library and working with kids should come on by and talk to us. Reading Program Times: Mondays: Preschool 10:30-11:30 am.
Movies-3:30-5:30 pm You can register anytime throughout the summer for any week. Children do not have to participate in all weeks. No registration will be taken over the phone.
