The North Carolina Poetry Society is accepting applications for its Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series, a program to bring student poets together with Distinguished Poet mentors. Three Distinguished Poets, one each from the east, central, and west of North Carolina, will mentor a middle-school, a high-school, a college or university student, and an adult currently not enrolled in a school program within their respective regions. Home-school student are also eligible to participate.

The selected Student Poets will present a reading with their Distinguished mentor. Fontana Regional Library proudly hosted the series at Jackson County Public Library this past April, with Brent Martin (distinguished poet for the west) and three local Student Poets.

"The Gilbert-Chappell program provides aspiring poets of all ages with an opportunity to spend a few months with me focusing on their work, as well as opportunities to read in public,” said Brent Martin.  “Its intention is to give the poet positive feedback in a one on one relationship that will build confidence in their writing and in their ability to read their work publicly."

For more information, visit the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series overview page. Student Applications are due by November 1st. You can also visit the Student Contests page for information about other opportunities for students in 3rd grade and up.
